“Yellow Bird” is the “Cool Cat” design, which is the forerunner
of the “Northeaster” design; similar, but smaller and lighter with a 10
½ foot aerofoil plank and 16 foot spruce mast, arranged to carry a DN
sail. She has a well-cushioned deep cockpit for warm upright
seating, neck comfort and excellent visibility (even with tri-focal
glasses), and a boom high enough to allow changing tacks with minimum
head ducking. There is room behind the seat back for safety
equipment and a nice lunch. She is ready to sail, complete, and
well debugged. I sailed her 26 days this winter and have found
her to be easy to sail, fast, stable and reliable.
The hull with springboard and hardware weigh only 137 pounds. I
transport her in a short bed, crew cab pickup truck, the springboard
going thru the rear-sliding window. All up, ready to sail she
weighs 250 pounds; light enough to be able to lift one end of the
runner plank with one hand.

Safety gear
and other equipment:
Hard water is on the way, and if you don't have your ice safety
equipment
yet, I'd like to recommend Swedish Ice Claws. The New Hampshire
Fish & Game
Department can back me up on this. All New Hampshire game wardens
carry Ice
Claws, and for good reason. Last winter one warden broke through
thin ice
on his snow machine. His machine sank to the bottom of the lake,
but he
used his Ice Claws to pull himself out of the water in seconds.
Why do Ice Claws work so well? Because they come in a
specially-designed
plastic holster that you wear around your neck, where you can reach
them
quickly in an emergency -- BEFORE the water soaks through your clothes
and
you start to panic.
Sure you can make your own "ice picks" or "bear claws", but why
bother?
Swedish Ice Claws are only $15 with free shipping.
Also check out the Nordic Lifeline, a summer/winter "throw bag"
stuffed
with
80 feet of floating polypropylene rescue rope. And Nordic Skates,
clip-on
ice skating blades that you use with cross-country ski boots.
Good for when
the wind dies.
Look for Ice Claws, Nordic Skates and Nordic Lifelines at selected
retailers
in northern New England, or order direct from:
